The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012 review : Peter Jackson creates the same world that he already shown us in the LOTR, but that's not the only thing he repeats.
He also repeats ripping Tolkiens book into a sucession of endless races and actions scenes with orcs falling everywhere and several "inventions" that mess the beautiful story created by the English author.
He also repeats those several minutes of platform game inside caves that we saw in Moria and in his version of King Kong.
If you loved the previous movies from Jackson, you will love this too.
If you are looking for some quality, you will only finding in the re-creation of the Middle Earth and the peformances of Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman and Cate Blanchett. An other great master peace has been added the the Lord of The Rings collection. This movie was an excellent example of how great actors, an amazing story and a beautiful world can be produced in such an excellent way. Peter Jackson has out done his self by creating this great film. There are differences from the book but I can't complain about any of them, yes I love the original story but this one is still one of the best. All in all a amazing movie. Over a decade after a little-known director from New Zealand managed to con New Line Cinema into giving him $300 million to make a trilogy based on JRR Tolkien's seminal fantasy (and long considered unfilmable) work The Lord of the Rings, the cinematic landscape for fantasy has changed drastically. Much like Tolkien's tome, the Lord of the Rings films came to utterly define high fantasy in film, with even competing fantasy adaptations like The Chronicles of Narnia and Alice in Wonderland cribbing from Peter Jackon's critically-acclaimed, audience-adored multipart epic. Now Jackson has returned to the land that made him famous for a go-round with Tolkien's earlier work, The Hobbit.
Tolkien's The Hobbit is far more modest in scope than its enormous sequel, and geared for a younger audience. It introduced the world to Bilbo Baggins, a typically quiet hobbit who is coaxed into adventure by the grey wizard Gandalf, enlisted to aid thirteen dwarves in reclaiming their long-lost homeland.
Jackson had the unenviable task of following up on his blockbuster Academy Award-winning masterpiece, and initially passed off the directing responsibilities to fantasy master Guillermo del Toro. Difficulties securing the film rights led to delay after delay, and del Toro finally departed, leaving the original creative team the ability to step back into place and create a follow-up/lead-in with the same creative staff in front of and behind the camera. Jackson returned as director, co-writing with Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens (though del Toro retains a screenwriting credit), Andrew Lesnie as cinematographer, and Howard Shore as composer, along with all of the other stalwarts of the original trilogy.
The lone exception to that is the recasting of Martin Freeman as the titular hobbit, taking over for the aging Ian Holm. Holm appears in the film's framing sequence (a scene that takes place immediately prior to the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring), along with that trilogy's star, Elijah Wood. But this time out, it's Freeman's show, and he's as charming, witty, and engaging as you could imagine. He also makes a perfect Young Ian Holm. The casting is truly inspired. Sir Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf (here playing his more impish grey incarnation, rather than the frankly humorless white version) and the heralded thespian manages to imbue his character with both immense power and gravitas, while still throwing in little flourishes that sell Gandalf as an imperfect man, rather than just an all-knowing power. Rounding out the third of this film's main characters, and an addition to this world, is Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the motley crew of dwarves. Armitage likewise manages to imbue Thorin with both rage and honor, and is easily believable as someone who could lead these dwarves into life-threatening battle. The other twelve dwarves are something of a blur, but a few of them manage to make an impression, even with limited screen time. I imagine the two future installments of the series will afford them each the chance to shine.
Which brings up the most contentious point of this whole Hobbit affair: the fact that it's a three-part epic. The Hobbit, as written, is a comparatively slim tome of around 300 pages (compare that to The Lord of the Rings' combined 1,600). This installment alone is ten minutes shy of a whopping three hours. And as anyone who's seen The Return of the King can attest, Jackson can get rather indulgent at times (the end[s] of that film). Initially the film was going to be split in twain, then later divvied up into three parts. Tolkien, ever the completist, wrote volumes of backstories for this world, and Jackson decided to pull from them to bulk out these films.
I've seen a lot of hay being made about the film being bloated and, yes, indulgent. I'm an editor at heart, and am generally hyper-sensitive about cutting down to the bone. But the strangest thing happened on the way to the Lonely Mountain: I found myself simply rolling along with the shaggy-dog pace of the film. It's astonishing in hindsight. The film virtually redefines "taking the scenic route," but the crazy thing is I didn't mind it in the least. I believe it's because of the lowered stakes of The Hobbit. Every single frame of The Lord of the Rings was suffused with overbearing doom; that trilogy's "save the world" plot became as heavy a burden to bear as the ring hung around Frodo's neck. But The Hobbit is lighter, freer, funnier, and doesn't have the weight of the world on its shoulders. It's rather the difference between having an appointment you need to get to in heavy traffic and taking a weekend to just drive around, stopping when and where you like. This pace will likely have a dire impact on the film's rewatchability, but sitting in the theater for a midnight showing? Magic.
The structure of the film itself seems to have ADD. Its innumerable diversions began to remind me of a live-action Family Guy episode, with character or event mentions that suddenly cause the film to cut away to a dramatization of said. But again, and I can't stress enough how unexpected this was for me, I didn't mind in the least (with one exception: it appears to be an inviolable rule that any scene in Rivendell will stop a film dead in its tracks).
The craft of the film manages to best that of its predecessor trilogy: Howard Shore turns in one of his most stirring scores, the production design and art direction are again immersive and beautiful, and Andrew Lesnie continues his unique style of cinematography combining gorgeous shots (wonderful) with frequently blowing out highlights (distracting and ugly).
One complaint I do have is Jackon's newfound over-reliance on CGI. Azog the Defiler (a chief antagonist of the film) and the Goblin King (a bit of a lark) are the sorts of character that would have (and should have) been practical effects in the original trilogy. Here they're fully CGI, and their menace is undermined by it. Gollum returns for his most famous scene, and looks wonderful; Andy Serkis' performance and the CGI truly sell this pitiful creature. CGI can be pitiful but not threatening, it appears.
I don't know what the other two installments of The Hobbit have in store. What I do know is that this return to Middle-earth is off to a great start, and if this is any indication of things to come, I'll most assuredly enjoy the ride.

Artemis Fowl was the first film exclusively released on Disney+ that I put my eyes on, and it will undoubtedly end up as one of the worst movies of 2020. From that moment on, I couldn't help but feel a bit skeptical about Disney deciding to place films initially intended for a theatrical release in their streaming service, which is the case of The One and Only Ivan. The thought "did they release it digitally because it's awful like the other one?" couldn't leave my mind, so I watched it with moderately low expectations…
Fortunately, this flick is one of the sweetest surprises of this year. I didn't expect to shed tears in such a generic tale, but I did. The story follows a familiar formula from the studio but with a few twists. The protagonist is the star of a declining show when someone new comes in to save the whole thing, making the protagonist jealous. However, this time, the protagonist doesn't try to sabotage anyone to be the main attraction again. Ivan becomes very close to Ruby (Brooklynn Prince) and really wants to fulfill a heartfelt promise that he makes to Stella: to set everyone free.
Mike White (who co-wrote one of the worst movies of all-time, The Emoji Movie) was also a reason for my low confidence levels, but I can now forgive him for being part of that other animated atrocity. White gives every single character a defining personality or at least a specific trait unique to that animal. Even side characters with no real impact in the story, like Henrietta (Chaka Khan), Murphy (Ron Funches), or Frankie (White himself), are clearly stuck in my memory due to their hilarious bits (I never imagined I would laugh to a "why did the chicken cross the road?" joke ever again).
Ivan, Ruby, Stella, and Bob (Danny DeVito) are undoubtedly the standouts. All are characters so easy to fall in love with. Ivan works beautifully as a protagonist whose backstory is as tragic as one can imagine. His arc is incredibly compelling and emotionally powerful, so much that it still ends partially sad. His relationship with Ruby feels authentic and heartfelt, just like with Stella. Bob is definitely the funniest of them all, but even he has a story of abandonment and isolation. Every wild animal deserves freedom, and every domestic animal deserves a family home. That's a message I'll always stand by and fight for as an animal lover.
The highest praise I can offer this film is that it feels surprisingly immersive, even when watching at home. When Ivan talked, I never thought "that's Sam Rockwell!". I always looked and heard Ivan as Ivan, same with every other character. The animals look impressively realistic, but movie magic reached a point where I can't even tell the difference between a real animal and a fake one sometimes. It's not really the case of The One and Only Ivan, but after The Lion King, something like the former doesn't really surprise me anymore. Still, it just goes to show how storytelling can be the headliner. I was so enthralled by the narrative that I couldn't care less about the visually stunning animals nor the excellent voice acting. I just wanted to see the animals be set free.
Finally, two more impactful aspects that made the film better for me. Craig Armstrong's score is exceptionally prone to chills and tears. It's subtle when it needs to be, and powerfully moving when the big moments arrive. One of my favorite scores of 2020. The last detail has to do with the movie's inception. Don't ask me why, but I missed the "inspired by a true story" at the opening credits. As usual in this type of films, right after these end, text accompanies photos and clips, in this case, of the real-life Ivan. In an otherwise generic movie, I was emotionally shocked once I saw those real images. I finish the film with tears of happiness, but I have to leave a disclaimer.
When it comes to negatives, this is one of those movies where I can't really point out straight-up flaws or technical issues. My only nitpick is that I'd have loved to see more development regarding Ivan and Mack's (Bryan Cranston) supposedly strong bond that they share as a family. It doesn't detract from the touching moments between the two, but it could have made those sequences much more impactful. It's simply a fun, entertaining, fast-paced, one-hour-and-a-half flick that works for both adults and children. However, even though there's no visible violence or animal abuse, some of the animal characters share their sorrowful, traumatic past, which can be a tad too dark for really young kids…
The One and Only Ivan is one of the most loving surprises of 2020. Boasting an impeccable cast and one of my favorite scores of the year, this adaptation of Ivan's true story might follow a (slightly changed) generic formula, but it's undoubtedly an emotional journey worthy of everyone's attention, both adults and children. Mike White delivers a heartfelt screenplay, packed with memorable animal characters easy to connect with, even for viewers who aren't animal lovers. A beautiful story filled with meaningful messages and tear-inducing moments, executed so brilliantly that it became one of my most immersive home viewings of the last few years. Visually, I can't point out a single issue, the animals look incredible. If I needed an argument to convince friends and family to subscribe to Disney+, this is the movie I'd show them…
Rating: A- Nothing all that fresh, but it certainly made me feel for the characters so that's always a big plus.
The cast elevate the film, for sure! Bryan Cranston, no matter the nature of any role he plays, is always enjoyable and/or likeable. He brings heart as Mack, as do Sam Rockwell (Ivan) and Angelina Jolie (Stella). I liked Danny DeVito as Bob, while Ariana Greenblatt portrays the wholesome Julia well.
The (true) premise is something we've all seen before, as such you're just waiting for the 'penny to drop' so the film can get going - once that happens onscreen events do improve, culminating in a very touching end. 'The One and Only Ivan' is ideal for family viewing, I'd say.

Ralph Breaks the Internet 2018 review : Gets right into the "Internet" part of _Ralph Breaks the Internet_ real early in the piece, and scarcely plods along ever-after. I was surprised that I enjoyed the first _Wreck-It Ralph_ movie, but I was expecting a step down in quality for this one, which I absolutely got. There's still some things to like, and even the core message is an important one we don't see much of, plus i'm sure this will work as a movie for kids, which to be fair is its target demographic, I'm just saying I don't think I'll ever come back to see Ralph break the Internet a second time around.
_Final rating:★★½ - Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._ Marginally exceeds the original, at least in my eyes.
The internet setting works way better than the video game world. Don't get me wrong, I very much enjoyed 'Wreck-It Ralph'. I just think this one feels much more relatable, the vast majority of viewers understand the internet as opposed to the smaller market for old arcade games. For that, it means you can do some much more with the premise. All the references are amusing, while the inclusion of the Disney world itself is pretty cool.
I do have a few critiques, of course. The run time is about 20 minutes too long, while the final act isn't as great as it could've been. Everything else, though, they get mostly spot on. It's very entertaining, the end credit scenes are terrific too.
John C. Reilly (Ralph) and Sarah Silverman (Vanellope) are again very good, Jane Lynch (Calhoun) and Jack McBrayer (Felix) are marginalised but I'd argue that's fine - there's not much more you could do with those two characters. Alan Tudyk returns too, albeit in a new role as KnowsMore. I'm not usually a fan of same actor/different character, but that newbie is fun. Taraji P. Henson (Yesss) and Gal Gadot (Shank) are two newcomers, Gadot's character is more memorable but both are up-to-scratch.
I really like this 'Ralph Breaks the Internet', it's a rare Disney animated sequel that has strong quality. Great watch, will watch again, and do recommend.
Even if you haven't seen the first one, you can watch this just fine.
As much as I like this movie, the best part is by far the cg animated Disney Princesses: what a good tease for new CG movies, which they should have been doing instead of the live action garbage.
Again, as much as I like this, it is a bit of a deviation from the first movie with a bit of a mixed antithetical message to it. While the first movie focused on Ralph and his quest dragging collateral damage in its wake to eventually bring the characters together in a spirit of inclusion, this movie scales up in a weird way, showing the internet as a place of connected inclusion and then "wrecking it". Even the main story line is about Ralph's mission to fix things so they can maintain a status quo and Vanellope's search for change and "the new". It's literally about how they shouldn't be together, or maybe that they're still together even if they aren't.
It just gets weird real fast, and while J.C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman do a great job with their roles, you've got to operate with some suspension of disbelief that they can do any of what they're doing or that it makes any sense. They also deviated with how Ralph "wrecks" things.
Once you get past some of the nit-picky stuff, they're on a well structured adventure filled with charm and wonderment with lots of interesting characters.
I honestly would be surprised if anyone actively disliked this.

Judd Apatow has directed/produced some hilarious pieces of cinema: Trainwreck, Bridesmaids, Superbad, Knocked Up, The 40 Year Old Virgin... He's got quite the filmography, there's no way of denying it. Therefore, his name alone is enough to grab my attention when a comedy co-written and directed by him comes along. Add Pete Davidson as a co-writer and the main star, plus a really fascinating cast with Marisa Tomei and Bill Burr, and I'm definitely interested. The King of Staten Island holds a formulaic premise (the whole "dead parent entails a bad kid who needs to learn how to be a better person" has been done to exhaustion), but is it able to elevate it in some way?
First of all, the dark humor really works for me. For anyone who doesn't appreciate this type of comedy, Apatow's film might be too excessive. Tons of unrestrained jokes about the most sensitive subjects, and characters with no limits to where they can go with their wicked sense of humor. So, if you're not a fan of dark comedy, this movie might turn out to be a very unpleasant experience. However, if you have no issues with laughing at a "bad joke", this comedy might just work well enough for you to have a good time. I had really good laughs.
Scott takes the "bad kid who does bad stuff" to a quite terrible (and sometimes illegal) level. He possesses all kinds of psychological issues that you can think of plus some more. He says the most depressing, sad, offensive things to anyone that crosses his path. Pete Davidson absolutely shines in this role, it really feels like he's having an outstanding amount of fun. However, his character goes through such an overlong and exaggerated route that I could neither relate to nor feel sorry for him. This will make or break the film for any viewer: your emotional connection with the protagonist.
As I said in the beginning, the narrative follows a pretty cliche story that people have seen thousands of times. So, from the get-go, it's fairly easy to understand where the movie is going, what's going to change within the characters, and how it's going to end. Screenplay surprises don't come often in this genre, and even when they do, very rarely, they're able to impact the audience in a way that completely changes our perspective on the film or its characters. The King of Staten Island is a movie that tells its viewers everything they need to know in the first ten to fifteen minutes, and then there's nothing remotely new throughout.
It's just way too long. A bit over two hours seeing someone trying to figure out what he's going to do with his life is not exactly the best entertainment ever. There's more than one way to try to relate to Pete Davidson's character, but I really needed to dig deep to find one. As people probably know, Davidson's father was also a firefighter who died in the 9/11 attacks, and this film clearly takes inspiration from Davidson's life. It's not his biography, but he definitely puts a lot of his own personal issues into Scott's personality. Some people even state that he's just portraying himself, and that's not that far from the truth.
In my opinion, the best aspect of the movie is undoubtedly the incredibly realistic dialogues. It genuinely feels like the characters are having real conversations. The editing is so impeccable that I forgot I was watching a film for a couple of moments. The chemistry between every member of the cast is so vibrant that every single dialogue between any two characters always feels extremely lifelike. Marisa Tomei and Bill Burr are astonishing, they truly are. I wish more time was given to develop a bit more of Bel Powley's personal subplot, but I understand that she's far from being one of the most relevant characters.
In the end, The King of Staten Island employs a very well-known (and a bit overused) formula that goes on for way too long, but Judd Apatow balances it with a hilariously dark sense of humor, with the help of his co-writers, Pete Davidson and Dave Sirus. Most of the comedy really works, which helped to get through the least entertaining (and predictable) portions of the narrative. Davidson shines in a role that many addressed as "he's just playing himself", but I find him incredibly engaging and captivating to watch, even though I can't quite relate to his character. The emotional attachment to the protagonist is the major component that's either going to make you love this flick or spend a couple of hours just watching someone trying to figure out what to do with his life. The realistic dialogues (elevated by perfect editing) and the cast's phenomenal chemistry just tip the scale to the positive side. I definitely recommend it, but with the small warning that if you're not a fan of dark comedy, then it's better to skip this one.
